Welcome to Slam Engineering

Slam Engineering is a professional firm that is based in the Hunter Valley which provides services to the heavy industrial sector, emerging renewables projects and numerous mines sites in NSW.

We undertake high-end engineering with our team consisting of multi-disciplined Engineers in the Electrical and Mechanical engineering fields.

We are a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that provides High Voltage Switching training courses, plus a variety of Industry Specific courses.

The depth of our organisation allows the right consultant to be assigned to the right project. Slam offer a professional product that generates repeat business from our expanding client base.

Meet the Team

The Slam Engineering team have over 500 years’ combined engineering experience working on, designing, improving, regulating, training, leading and managing resources for operations and maintenance of mining operations, industry and energy sectors. 

This experience was obtained through working for major Mining houses, Heavy Industrial plants, Power Utilities, Natural Gas, Renewables and multi-national Consultancy firms.

Murray Timpson

Director

B.Eng B.Bus MIEAust. CPEng NPER RPEQ

Using his extensive experience and knowledge, Murray manages client development and project delivery to key clients.
He has more than 26 years’ experience in control and power systems, high voltage, training, facilitation, supervision, heavy mobile equipment, fixed plant, project management, budgeting and fault-finding. Murray gains career satisfaction by taking years of knowledge and practical experience and developing training packages to train others in these special skills.
Prior to founding Slam Engineering, Murray held Superintendent and Specialist positions with Idemitsu, Rio Tinto, Vale and BMA. His engineering consultancy experience includes roles with WorleyParsons and Bechtel.
Murray is a Chartered Professional Engineer having attained dual degrees Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) and Bachelor Business from the University of Southern Queensland, he also maintains Electrical Engineers Certificate of Competency (Underground) for NSW and QLD. Murray has attained a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and holds Engineers Australia committee position on Standards Australia EL-023 : Electrical Equipment in Mines and Quarries. He is also the Co-President of MEMMES (Mining Electrical Mining Mechanical Engineering Society).
Murray enjoys mentoring young engineers towards attaining their professional goals. In his spare time, he enjoys boating, swimming and squash.

Adele Timpson

General Manager

B.Com FCPA

In this role Adele provides leadership and strategic direction to Consultants and Support staff by establishing credible and collaborative relationships with key stakeholders and developing business strategy in line with market demands, highlighting niche market opportunities and match to internal resources. Her accountability lies with Finance Management, internal systems and processes and to develop, monitor and drive expectations for KPI’s in safety, business performance, utilisation, lead generation and diversification.
During her career Adele has developed into a mining specific commercial professional with her main focus being extracting the greatest value from goods and services in the maintenance areas.
Prior to joining Slam Engineering, Adele led Contractor Management and Procurement teams within Rio Tinto and was part of the global transformation project that delivered major savings to the bottom line.
Adele holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Newcastle and is a fellow member of CPA Australia.
Being a mother of two, Adele recognises the challenges professional working mothers are faced with and understands the benefits when the correct balance is obtained. To unwind Adele enjoys a round of golf and anything related to water sports.

Phillip Wolfenden

Senior Electrical Engineer

Phil’s work is focused on the high-end strategic engineering which includes the review of Electrical Engineering Control Plans and developing maintenance regimes and carrying our statutory positions in underground coal, open cut coal and underground metalliferous clients. He also concentrates on FMECA projects and project management of large scale projects.
With a career extending over 40 years the majority of Phil’s experience has been within the coal mining industry, the last 30 years in senior engineering roles with a particular focus on project management and leadership, prior to joining Slam Engineering, Phil was the Engineering and Maintenance Manager at Yancoal’s Austar Coal mine.
Phil is a qualified Underground Statutory Engineer and has post graduate diplomas’ in Maintenance Management and Project Management.
Outside of work Phil enjoys working on his hobby farm.

Tony Bendeich

Senior Mechanical Engineer

Tony has over 30 years experience and provides consulting work in engineering, maintenance systems compliance and covers the position of Manager of Mechanical Engineering when required.

 A practical engineer, he is expanding the services that are complimented by a mechanical trade background.  Tony started his career working at the Steelworks moving onto coal handling and preparation and later gained extensive experience in underground coal. 

 Before coming to SLAM Tony spent 15 years at Austar where he held the positions of Statutory Mechanical Engineer, Mechanical Operations Engineer and Development Engineer. Prior to that he worked with Dartbrook coal in numerous engineering roles for 11 years.

Tony is highly skilled in project management, development of control plans with supporting risk assessments, managing training requirements, compliance management and incident investigation. Tony is a qualified Underground Statutory Engineer.

David Granger

Senior Electrical Engineer

David is engaged to work on strategic engineering projects. These projects include developing maintenance strategies, undertaking electrical statutory accountabilities and project management of overhauls of major equipment.

He has a lengthy career in mining and associated industries. Starting as an apprentice electrician, he moved on to hold numerous statutory positions and Engineering Management roles with Centennial Coal. David’s recent experience has been Project Management, leading Electrical and Mechanical disciplines in equipment overhauls.

David is a qualified Underground Statutory Engineer and holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

Robert McKenzie

Senior Electrical Engineer

Robert is a qualified Underground Statutory Electrical Engineer with extensive experience within both coal mining and quarries. He began his career as an Electrician with Centennial Coal (then Elcom Collieries) where he moved into numerous Electrical Engineering roles. Robert then spent 8 years with the Department of Primary Industries as an Inspector of Electrical Engineering, focusing on extractive industries.

Robert has years of hands on experience within the mining industry and with the mining regulator. He knows and understands the mining legislation and application of the requirements. He has working relationships with the regulator’s inspectors and knows the expectations of the inspectors.

Jeff Taylor

Electrical Trainer Assessor

Jeff is a High Voltage Electrical specialist who utilises his leadership skills and passion for his trade to train electricians in High Voltage Switching. He has extensive experience in heavy industry having completed his apprenticeship and subsequently 20 years as a tradesman with Tomago Aluminium. After completing his apprenticeship Jeff has undertaken the roles of Senior High Voltage Substation Electrician, Plant Wide Shift
Electrician, Electrical Technical Advisor and Electrical Tradesman at Tomago Aluminium.

Jeff is highly regarded for his commitment to workplace health and safety, producing quality work, protecting the environment and teamwork. His dedication to safety and leadership skills are further identified by his previous position as an onsite emergency response team captain.
Outside of work Jeff is the President of his 4wd club.

Brendan McMurray

Mechanical Engineer

Brendan has extensive experience working as a mechanical engineer with over 15 years’ experience.  He works with Condition Monitoring Programs, offers mentoring and training support in the reliability and defect management space. In addition to this Brendan leads site mechanical projects, compliance auditing and reviewing and updating site processes and procedures.

Brendan’s experience extends to a wide variety of underground and surface mining equipment including longwall production systems, heavy earth moving, development production systems and conveyors. He also completes whole of plant analysis and RCA investigations. Brendan builds cases for improvements to equipment and creates maintenance practices or processes to improve plant performance and overall reliability. He has a strong focus on impacts to production and safety.

Kody Schmakeit

Electrical Engineer

Kody is a degree qualified Electrical Engineer having worked with the Centennial group at various underground mines and corporate office. He enjoys tactical engineering with power studies, engineering design, preparing scope of works and compliance reviews.

Kody’s is a hands-on engineer who can assist our clients with leadership of trades, fault finding and strategic projects. His experience to date has been project management of machine overhauls, day to day coordination of tradesmen in a mining environment and site electrical engineering.

Kody enjoys fishing and camping in his spare time.

Warren Olsen

Senior Electrical Engineer

Warren is engaged to work on strategic engineering projects across a range of Electrical and Mechanical disciplines. Being a dual qualified (Electrical & Mechanical) Engineer Warren offers high level skill and flexibility in client requirements.

Warrens project experience includes, electricity usage analysis, EECP & MECP review and standard development, High Voltage management and FMECA reviews. These projects include developing maintenance strategies, undertaking electrical statutory accountabilities and specialised engineering and auditing of mining equipment.

He has an extensive career in mining beginning as an apprentice electrician and later working as an Engineering General Manager. Warren has over 25 years’ experience with a mix of open cut, underground, and preparation plant equipment and infrastructure.

Michael Cann

Mechanical Trainer Assessor

Michael is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Mechanical professional with experience working on a diverse array of equipment. He has worked on underground and open cut mining equipment and tunnelling equipment. Michael is a technically astute individual who has utilised his extensive experience to develop and prepare mining specific training packages that he delivers and assess. The packages to date are Mine Design Guideline (MDG)15, Technical Reference to Hot Works and Extra Low Voltage for Non-Electrical Trades. Michael is highly skilled in equipment compliance, project management, planning and scheduling, machine audits, compliance reviews, risk management and diesel systems, pneumatics and hydraulic diagnostics. Michael’s experience also includes managing all components of contracts and project management of machine overhauls including planning, liaising with customers, developing BOM’s and organising contractors, coaching and supervision of trades on safety, quality and environment factors together with development of SWMS and risk assessments.

Matthew Baker

Mechanical Inspector

Matthew is a versatile, skilled and a self-directing professional Plant Mechanic with over 19 years of progressive experience in the Mining and Earthmoving industry. Offering robust organization and problem-solving skills. Recognized throughout his career as a “go to” resource. Proven history of working with diverse groups of clients, identifying their needs, forming a strategic plan to maximise outcomes. Capable at juggling several projects at once, prioritizing duties, coordinating normal working day activities, and thriving in a fast-paced environments meeting strict deadlines.

Matthew is currently studying for his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and is a talented photographer and loves to go dirt bike riding to unwind.

David Guy

Senior Mechanical Engineer

David has 40 years experience and provides consulting work in engineering, project management, system reviews, relief mine site Manager of Mechanical Engineering both open cut and underground. 

 David is a mechanical engineer who started his career working in underground mining and moved to processing plants, in maintenance engineering, projects, superintendent and management positions. He is highly skilled in mechanical leadership, project management, development of maintenance strategies and development of safe work procedures.

 David also volunteers with the Samarians leading teams to assist with the restoration following the 2019/2020 bushfires.

Noel Woods

Trainee Electrical Engineer

Noel is a third Year Electrical & Electronics Engineering student at the University of Newcastle. 

Noel supports our Senior Engineers and Trainers with preparation of client engineering procedures, policies and documents and updating of Slam’s RTO training documentation. 

He is assisting the compliance team developing and refining their electronic auditing tools. 

Noel volunteers with the NSW State Emergency Service and was a team leader during the 2022 NSW flood rescues.

Stephen Abercrombie

Business Development Manager

Stephen’s responsibilities are to maintain our client relationships across mining, industrial and renewable sectors. His challenges are to increase the awareness of the Slam Engineering brand and expand our customer base.

Stephen is on the road most weeks conducting face to face meetings to ensure our clients are across our services streams and ensuring Slam Engineering is delivering our services above our client’s expectations.

Stephen is an Electrician by trade with over 40 years’ experience in Coal Mining, Hard Rock and Tunnelling. He has also been involved with Switch gear Design, Manufacture, Commissioning, Training and Business Development. Stephen has spent most time with OEM’s and underground mining

In his spare time Stephen enjoys sailing, playing tennis and Mining History.

Lisa Knox

Finance and Marketing Specialist

In this role Lisa is responsible for Finance, Payroll, Business Systems, Client induction systems and monthly KPI reporting plus general administration tasks.

Lisa holds a Bachelor of Business degree and a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Prior to joining Slam she was the Regional Accountant for YMCA NSW and has also held accounting positions with Calvary Retirement Community and Kilpatrick Lake MacKenzie. Lisa has 10 years company accounting experience.

Leanne Tipper

Office Manager

In this role Leanne is responsible for office management and administration along with finance and payroll.

Leanne joins us from Global Soil Solutions where she held a similar role for over 16 years. Leanne has a Diploma of Business and is skilled in the MS Office suite and various accounting systems.
Leanne works closely with our consultants and provides administration assistance on projects where required.

Jarrod McMurray

Trainee Business Administration

Jarrod is in the second year of his Business Administration degree working toward a career in Accounting.

Jarrod works with the RTO administration, performs internal weekly reporting, month end accounting and general administration across both Consultancy and Training business.

In his spare time Jarrod like to visit the gym and enjoys everything about trains.
