Slam Engineering & Consulting is a professional firm that is based in the Hunter Valley which provides services to the heavy industrial sector, emerging renewables projects and numerous mines sites in NSW. We undertake high-end engineering with our team consisting of multi-disciplined Engineers in the engineering fields of Mechanical, Electrical and Mining.

The Slam Engineering & Consulting team have over 500 years’ combined engineering experience working on, designing, improving, regulating, leading and managing resources for operations and maintenance of mining operations, industry and energy sectors.
This experience was obtained through working for major Mining houses, Heavy Industrial plants, Power Utilities, Natural Gas, Renewables and multi-national Consultancy firms.

Using his extensive experience and knowledge, Murray manages client development and project delivery to key clients. He has more than 20 years experience in control and power systems, high voltage, training, facilitation, supervision, heavy mobile equipment, fixed plant, project management, budgeting and fault-finding.
Prior to founding Slam Engineering, Murray held Superintendent and Specialist positions with Idemitsu, Rio Tinto, Vale and BMA. His engineering consultancy experience includes roles with WorleyParsons and Bechtel.
Murray holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) degree and a Bachelor Business degree both from the University of Southern Queensland, he also maintains Electrical Engineers Certificate of Competency (Underground) for NSW and QLD.
In his spare time, Murray enjoys mentoring young engineers towards attaining their professional goals.
In this role Adele looks at business development and refining clients needs by ensuring the right consultant is assigned to the right project. During her career Adele has developed into a mining specific commercial professional with her main focus being extracting the greatest value from goods and services in the maintenance areas.
Prior to joining Slam Engineering, Adele led Contractor Management and Procurement teams within Rio Tinto and was part of the global transformation project that delivered major savings to the bottom line.
Adele holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Newcastle and is a member of CPA Australia.
Being a mother of two, Adele recognises the challenges professional working mothers are faced with and understands the benefits when the correct balance is obtained.
Phil’s work is focused on the high end strategic engineering which includes the review of Electrical Engineering Control Plans and developing maintenance regimes for our clients. He also concentrates on working with and introducing new underground clients to the business.
With a career extending over 40 years the majority of Phil’s experience has been within the coal mining industry, the last 30 years in senior engineering roles with a particular focus on project management and leadership, prior to joining Slam Engineering, Phil was the Engineering and Maintenance Manager at Yancoal’s Austar Coal mine.
Phil is a qualified Underground Statutory Engineer and has post graduate diplomas’ in Maintenance Management and Project Management.
Outside of work Phil enjoys working on his hobby farm.
Grahame is engaged to lead the expansion of our mechanical engineering services. Grahame has over 30 years mechanical engineering experience, commencing his career at BHP (Coated Products) as a
Trainee Mechanical Engineer he combined various fitting and machining tasks along with engineering design and project management. Grahame was with CCI Pope (now Bureau Veritas) for 20 years, his achievements included the creation of lubrication and condition monitoring strategies and procedures for commissioning and testing of new equipment, routine maintenance, statutory inspections, inspection of structural assets, rationalisation and optimisation of quantity and types of lubricants used.
Grahame’s experience includes structural integrity inspections and non-destructive testing of assets within processing plants, site structures and buildings, mobile and fixed cranes, elevated work platforms, forklifts and concrete pumping trucks. The industries he has performed these inspections in were steel making, construction, aluminium smelting, chemical plants, rock quarries and open cut and underground mines.
In the last ten years Grahame has work directly for the mine operator undertaking the site statutory mechanical accountability. Grahame holds a Statutory Mechanical Engineers certificate of competency and as such provides technical, legislative and procedural advice, manages complex projects and was the contract manager for the fire protection services and tyre services to the operation.
In his spare time Grahame loves to run and competes in all distances including ultramarathons.
David is engaged to work on strategic engineering projects. These projects include developing maintenance strategies, undertaking electrical statutory accountabilities and project management of overhauls of major equipment.
He has a lengthy career in mining and associated industries. Starting as an apprentice electrician, he moved on to hold numerous statutory positions and Engineering Management roles with Centennial Coal. David’s recent experience has been Project Management, leading Electrical and Mechanical disciplines in equipment overhauls.
David is a qualified Underground Statutory Engineer and holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
Robert is a mining engineer professional with more than 39 years’ experience in both Australian and New Zealand mines.
Robert has held a diverse range of positions including Undermanager-in-Charge, Deputy Mine Manager, Technical Services Manager, General and Statutory Mine Manager, Production Manager, Operations Manager, Area Support Manager and several contract Project Manager roles. Robert’s major projects of note include the Hunter Expressway, in which he was a key member of the initial bid-winning team and Subsidence Manager for the duration. He also led the team that successfully managed the Collinsville mine spontaneous combustion incident of 2012. Furthermore, he led the Southland mine through the Goaf fire of 2003-2004 – managing the evacuation, sealing and re-establishment of operations without incident or injury.
Robert is recognised as a mining safety leader, being part of three safety control plan teams (Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, and ventilation) who reviewed/drafted the new mine harmonisation OHS legislation.
Robert has been directly involved in introducing many pioneering systems that are now mainstays of Australian mines. He has also delivered numerous conference paper on roof control, fall recovery, continuous improvement and productivity, mining systems and analysis, and safety systems in Australia and the USA.
Robert is a qualified Underground Statutory Electrical Engineer with extensive experience within both coal mining and quarries. He began his career as an Electrician with Centennial Coal (then Elcom Collieries) where he moved into numerous Electrical Engineering roles. Robert then spent 8 years with the Department of Primary Industries as an Inspector of Electrical Engineering, focusing on extractive industries.
Robert has years of hands on experience within the mining industry and with the mining regulator. He knows and understands the mining legislation and application of the requirements. He has working relationships with the regulator’s inspectors and knows the expectations of the inspectors.
Jim has over 30 years electrical engineering experience with his key areas of expertise in design and management of high voltage (HV) assets in mining, utility and industrial areas. Jim is highly experienced in earthing system testing and commissioning including soil resistivity testing, routine testing and current injection testing. He has extensive knowledge and experience in the design and maintenance of underground mining products including longwall shearers and battery haulage vehicles for underground mines. Prior to joining Slam Engineering, Jim worked for 15 years with Ausgrid (formally Energy Australia) holding numerous roles including Senior Electrical Engineer. During his career Jim has performed analysis of network performance, HV load data and developed strategies to eliminate capacity constraints, overloads and unplanned outages. In the early stage of his career Jim worked on switchboard design, power systems and preparing technical reports, additionally he provided drafting services for aircraft electrical and control systems. Jim is a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) and has a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) from Newcastle University.
Steven is a qualified Underground Statutory Electrical Engineer with extensive experience in mining.
Steven is an experienced Engineering Manager with a strong background in engineering leadership and project management. In his previous roles with the Resources Regulator (NSW Government) he established an intricate knowledge of Standards, Guidelines and Codes of Practice.
His focus is on reviewing and developing Electrical Engineering Control Plans and large project management work. Steven is highly experienced in incident and accident investigation and provides leadership in heading up Investigation teams on behalf of our clients to alleviate the loss of productivity and role replacement issues during an intense investigation period.
Steven has attained a Bachelor of Laws (Hon) and hold a Master of Laws (International Environmental Law) both completed at Macquarie University.
Outside work Steven’s interests are road cycling and mountain bike riding.
John is a qualified Underground Statutory Electrical Engineer with extensive experience in coal mining. John has had a long career with Centennial Coal where he worked his way up in the electrical engineering field. He has extensive experience in project management and electrical leadership.
Graham is engaged to work on engineering projects involving Electrical Design, High Voltage and Supervision. He has an extensive electrical career working in renewable energy, mining and telecommunications. Graham is a hands-on engineer who can assist our clients with leadership of trades and strategic projects. His career has led him to undertake various roles such as electrical designer, commissioning engineer, field service engineer along with fault finding, PLC, SCADA and working with intrinsically safe equipment.
Mark is a hands-on project engineer with over 39 years of extensive experience in heavy industry & mining. With key capabilities covering civil and mechanical engineering disciplines.
Mark has led many projects in coal preparation and mineral processing plants. These include being a senior engineer in a Queensland coal plant upgrade and improving the use of flocculant and product yield
for CHPP’s in the Hunter Valley. He has led mechanical maintenance teams on screen maintenance contracts and improved reliability and increased profitability for his clients.
Complimenting this, Mark has work on many large civil projects performing which have included water infrastructure, tailings, sewerage treatment plants and earthworks and asphalt.
Mark’s key skills are his leadership and management skills, maintaining workplace safety standards on site with 100% commitment to safety while managing contracts, tenders and work schedules within
timeframes and budget.
Michael looks after major projects for our clients. His interests lie in power systems and High Voltage management.
Michael completed his Graduate program with Glencore working in both underground and open-cut environments. He is well respected by his clients.
He holds an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Newcastle and is furthering his professional qualifications with post graduate study in the finance sector.
Michael is a well travelled individual who likes to rock climb in his spare time.
Greg’s focus is on Electrical design, Supervision and Power control. He has a range of experience in construction, shutdowns, projects and electrical power, controls, instrumentation and design. Greg will be looking to expand our capability into instrumentation and power studies across our client base.
Prior to joining Slam Engineering, Greg worked on-site for businesses such as Port Waratah Coal Services, Bechtel (QCLNG), Worley Parsons, Orica and Hunter Control. His career has led him to undertake various roles such as electrical designer, planner, drafter, supervisor and electrician. Greg is a qualified electrician and holds licences in NSW and WA.
Michael leads our mechanical introduction to site work for both underground and open-cut equipment. Michael is a trade qualified Fitter Machinist and Boilermaker having worked in many Fabrication and Machining workshops and mine site field services crews which have included Industria, Tefol, Alfabs and Nova Crane Services. He is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable mechanical professional with experience working on a diverse array of equipment, which includes underground and open cut mining equipment, Power Stations, Solar Farms and Coal Handling Plants. Michael is qualified in Risk Assessment Facilitation (G2) and Explosion Protected Diesel Engine Systems Maintenance and he is currently working towards formal Mechanical Engineering qualifications, to further his engineering application across our service base. Michael is a technically astute individual who understands the legislation he works under. Michael offers a unique service being available for mining and associated clients, he can deliver audit inspections, project management and overhaul services in the local Hunter areas or at any location to best suit the clients demands.
Stephen’s responsibilities are to maintain our client relationships across mining, industrial and renewable sectors. His challenges are to increase the awareness of the Slam Engineering brand and expand our customer base.
Stephen is on the road most weeks conducting face to face meetings to ensure our clients are across our services streams and ensuring Slam Engineering is delivering our services above our client’s expectations.
Stephen is an Electrician by trade with over 40 years’ experience in Coal Mining, Hard Rock and Tunnelling. He has also been involved with Switch gear Design, Manufacture, Commissioning, Training and Business Development. Stephen has spent most time with OEM’s and underground mining
In his spare time Stephen enjoys sailing, playing tennis and Mining History.
In this role Lisa is responsible for Finance, Payroll, Business Systems, Client induction systems and monthly KPI reporting plus general administration tasks.
Lisa holds a Bachelor of Business degree and a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Prior to joining Slam she was the Regional Accountant for YMCA NSW and has also held accounting positions with Calvary Retirement Community and Kilpatrick Lake MacKenzie. Lisa has 10 years company accounting experience.
In this role Leanne is responsible for office management and administration along with finance and payroll.
Leanne joins us from Global Soil Solutions where she held a similar role for over 16 years. Leanne has a Diploma of Business and is skilled in the MS Office suite and various accounting systems.
Leanne works closely with our consultants and provides administration assistance on projects where required.
